Ronald George Sorensen passed away unexpectedly July 6, 2023 due to a severe allergic reaction to medications. Ron was born in Murray, UT March 20, 1951 to George Alden Sorensen “Gus” and Betty Lou Jacobson Sorensen.

Ron graduated from Hillcrest High School then went on to earn a Bachelor’s from the University of Utah and a masters from the University of Phoenix.

He married his eternal companion Debbie K Thomson in 1976 in the Salt Lake Temple. He built his home and family in Draper.

He enjoyed teaching his kids and grandkids to drive the lawn tractor, garden, and work hard. Some of the fun activities he enjoyed doing with his family were fishing, rock hounding, camping, golf ball hunting, hiking, watching movies, eating popcorn, and sitting around campfires. He was always there to support his loved ones at sporting events, concerts, and other activities. As the patriarch of the family his kids and grandchildren were his top priority.

Professionally he worked at Eimco, Utah Power and Light/Pacific Corp, Questar, and Rio Tinto contributing to the construction of power plants, wind farms, and mining projects across many western states.

As a devoted follower of Jesus Christ, he served in many capacities in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. As a young man he served as a Missionary in the Minnesota Manitoba Mission. He also served as Young Men’s President, High Councilman, Bishopric Counselor, High Priest Group Leader, Elder’s Quorum President and Stake Clerk. He and his wife Debbie served as missionaries at the GEO Federal Halfway House and at the time of his passing were serving at the West Valley My Hometown Mission.

Ron was always looking for ways to serve others regardless of worldly status. He was a friend to everyone and loved by all.

He is survived by his wife, Debbie Sorensen, children, Kyle (Cheryl), Darin (Leisel), Kaydee McMahon (Bob), Carrie Simister (Ryan), grandchildren Elizabeth, Parley, Makayla, Heber, Haley, Aspen, Crew, Tyler, Mia and Noreen, siblings Lynn Wallace, Jeff and Paul. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 am on Saturday July 15, 2023 at the Church of Jesus Christ at 13366 South 1300 East, Draper, UT. Viewings will be held on Friday evening from 6:00 – 8:00 pm at Larkin Sunset Gardens, 1950 East Dimple Dell Road (10600 South), Sandy, UT and on Saturday morning from 9:30 – 10:30 am prior to the services at the church.

Ron was a very great guy and friend to many. I long remember a young adult trip with him in 2 motor homes where we visited San Francisco, LA, and San Diego. He was a great leader on that vacation. May he rest in peace and find great love on the other side. We will miss him!

I always remember how Ron was a kind person and was a good friend to me and many others. After all, us Ron's had to stick together!  Rest in peace and may our Lord bring peace and comfort to your family.

Ron and I moved in across the street from each other in August of 1963 just before school started. We quickly became best friends. Seventh grade was quite an adjustment for both of us. We later added Arnie Widerberg to make us a trio in high school. The best word that I could use to describe Ron is determined whether it was education, work or recreation. I was able to visit him twice while he was in the hospital and he just never gave up. He was my hero and I will miss him greatly. His sweet wife Debbie was by his side from morning to night. He was fortunate to find her.

I first met Ron in Jr. High when he moved into my ward. A couple years later the ward was divided and we ended up in separate wards. We were still friends but at school only.
During our junior year we started hanging out together along with Brian Glover. We had some great times back then and made tons of life long memories.

After he returned from his mission we went our own ways and raised our families.
We reconnected when we turned 60 and along with Brian have been going to lunch several times a year.  The last time was a week before he went in for hip surgery.

I attended his funeral today and heard what I already knew. He was a great person and a true friend. He is going to be greatly missed.

I was so sorry to hear about Ron's passing.  He was a wonderful person and a good friend to so many of us.  I knew Ron first in junior high school, then Hillcrest, then again at the University of Utah.  I had a big crush on him in high school but we never went out.  He was always friendly and smiling to everyone and was a loyal friend.  He had a good sense of humor and a depth to him that went below the surface.  When we reconnected at the University of Utah after his mission, we went out several times.  We had fun but just remained friends.  Ron found the love of his life and his eternal companion in Debbie, and they have certainly built a wonderful family together.  Ron is one of those people that will be remembered by so many.  It was interesting to learn of all his service, along with Debbie, and of the great love he had for his family, the Gospel and his close friends.  My deepest sympathy goes out to the family and all who knew Ron.
